Chapter 9 - The Matriarch's Fall

Margaret's words hit me like a physical blow to the chest.

I looked over at Emily, who was suddenly coughing violently into her hands.

A small trickle of dark blood ran from the corner of her pale lips.

Margaret calmly stated that the only antidote was locked inside a vault at her private airstrip.

She gave me exactly one hour to bring Lily to the airstrip, or I would watch my wife bleed out from the inside.

I hung up the phone and pressed my foot down hard on the accelerator.

I didn't drive to the airstrip alone.

I used the burner phone to send the entire flash drive of bribery, money laundering, and illegal medical harvesting to the FBI field office.

I attached a simple message stating that the head of the cartel was fleeing the country at the private airfield.

When I crashed the Mercedes through the chain-link gates of the airstrip, Margaret was standing by her private jet.

She held a small silver case containing the antidote, smiling triumphantly as I carried a bundled-up child toward her.

I handed her the heavy bundle.

Margaret pulled back the blanket, only to find a fire extinguisher wrapped in Vanessa's heavy coat.

Before she could scream, a dozen black tactical vans swarmed the tarmac, sirens blaring into the night.

FBI agents poured out, aiming assault rifles at Margaret and her private security team.

I tackled my mother to the concrete, tearing the silver case from her manicured hands.

I ran back to the car and injected the antidote directly into Emily's arm.

Margaret screamed in pure rage as the agents placed her in heavy steel handcuffs.

She looked at me with absolute hatred and swore she would destroy me.

I smiled, holding up the laptop, and forced her thumb onto the biometric scanner before the police dragged her away.
