Chapter 2 - The Morning Raid

I drove us to a cheap, roadside motel on the edge of the city limits.

It was the kind of place that only took cash and didn't ask for identification.

Emily fell asleep almost immediately, exhausted from the blood loss and the sheer emotional trauma of the night.

I tucked Lily into the stiff motel sheets and promised her that nobody was going to hurt our family ever again.

Once they were both asleep, I pulled my laptop from my bag and plugged in Vanessa's flash drive.

I spent the next three hours bypassing the basic encryption software.

When the main folder finally cracked open, I felt physically sick.

It was a vast archive of medical records, bank transfers, and legal documents spanning the last two years.

I opened a file with my mother's name on it.

The documents revealed that Margaret had a terminal genetic disease affecting her bone marrow.

Her body was rejecting every synthetic treatment money could buy.

I opened the next file, which was labeled with Lily's name.

It was a private genetic screening that Vanessa had secretly ordered using a stolen hair sample from my daughter.

Lily was a perfect, one-in-a-million biological match for Margaret's life-saving marrow transplant.

They didn't just want to take my daughter away from Emily.

They intended to lock Lily in a private medical facility and harvest her bone marrow to keep my mother alive.

A loud crunch of tires on gravel snapped me out of my horror.

I peered through the dusty blinds of the motel window.

Three black SUVs had silently pulled into the parking lot, blocking all the exits.

Six heavily armed men stepped out into the morning fog, wearing tactical vests with fake CPS badges pinned to their chests.
