Chapter 3 - The Escape

Panic surged through my chest, but I forced my mind to remain perfectly calm.
I shook Emily awake and pressed a hand over her mouth to keep her quiet.
I quickly whispered that Margaret's men were outside and we had to leave right this second.
Emily's eyes widened in terror, but she nodded and quietly lifted a sleeping Lily into her arms.
I grabbed the laptop, the flash drive, and the burner phone, shoving them into my backpack.
Heavy footsteps echoed on the concrete walkway just outside our door.
A man's voice demanded that we open up in the name of Child Protective Services.
I led Emily into the cramped motel bathroom and quietly slid the frosted glass window open.
The alleyway behind the motel was empty, save for a rusted laundry delivery truck with its engine idling.
I climbed out first, my boots landing softly on the wet pavement.
I reached up and pulled Lily through the window, handing her to Emily as she climbed out behind me.
The front door of our motel room shattered inward with a deafening crash.
I heard the men shouting as they tore the room apart looking for us.
We sprinted toward the delivery truck and threw open the back cargo doors.
I shoved Emily and Lily inside, hiding them behind massive canvas bags of dirty linens.
I ran around to the driver's side and yanked the startled delivery driver out of his seat.
I threw a stack of hundred-dollar bills at his chest and told him to run for his life.
I slammed the truck into gear and stomped on the gas pedal.
The heavy vehicle lurched forward, smashing through a wooden fence and tearing out onto the main highway.
I checked the rearview mirror, letting out a massive sigh of relief when I saw no black SUVs behind us.

Then Emily tapped on the partition glass, her face completely pale.
She pointed to her bandaged arm, where a deep, dark red infection was visibly spreading up to her shoulder.
