Chapter 4 - The Dental Trap

Emily was burning with a severe fever, and her breathing was growing shallow.
The antique crystal from Margaret's bar cart had likely been covered in decades of dust and bacteria.
I knew taking her to a public hospital would instantly alert Vanessa and Greg, who had connections all over the city.
I had to get her medical attention without leaving a paper trail.
I drove to the affluent suburbs and parked the stolen truck in the alley behind Greg's high-end dental clinic.
It was Sunday morning, and the massive, state-of-the-art facility was closed to the public.
I left Emily resting in the back of the truck with Lily, promising I would return with antibiotics and bandages.
I used a heavy crowbar from the truck to shatter the back door's security lock.
The clinic was silent and sterile, smelling strongly of mint and antiseptic.
I raided the surgical supply closet, grabbing broad-spectrum antibiotics, painkillers, and sterile suturing kits.
As I shoved the medicine into my bag, I noticed a glowing light coming from Greg's private office.
His main computer terminal was unlocked and downloading large encrypted files.
I sat down in his leather chair and realized the files were international wire transfers.
Greg was moving millions of dollars out of Margaret's trust fund into offshore accounts.
He was planning to steal my mother's fortune the moment she got her transplant and changed her will.
I quickly plugged my own flash drive in to copy the evidence.
Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the office slammed shut and the electronic deadbolt clicked loudly.
The digital thermostat on the wall beeped, and the air vents began hissing.
A sweet, chemical smell flooded the small room.

Greg's voice echoed through the intercom on the desk, laughing as he watched me through a hidden security camera.
He told me to take a deep breath and enjoy the surgical laughing gas before he came in to finish me off.
