Chapter 5 - Blood in the Server Room

My vision instantly began to blur as the heavy nitrous oxide filled my lungs.
I held my breath and stumbled away from the desk, my legs feeling like lead.
I grabbed a heavy bronze sculpture from Greg's bookshelf and swung it with all my remaining strength at the reinforced glass door.
The glass didn't shatter, but a large spiderweb crack appeared in the center.
My lungs burned for oxygen, and dark spots danced across my vision.
I swung the sculpture a second time, shattering the glass panel completely.
I dove through the jagged opening, cutting my shoulder as I tumbled into the hallway.
I gasped for clean air, coughing violently as the sweet gas dissipated.
Before I could stand, a heavy boot kicked me squarely in the ribs.
I rolled onto my back and looked up to see Greg standing over me, holding a surgical scalpel.
Two massive thugs in tactical gear stood right behind him.
Greg sneered, calling me a pathetic loser who should have just let them take the trailer trash out with the garbage.
He lunged forward, aiming the razor-sharp scalpel directly at my throat.
I grabbed a heavy fire extinguisher from the wall and smashed it upward into Greg's jaw.
He collapsed to the floor in a heap of blood and shattered teeth.
I pulled the pin on the extinguisher and sprayed a massive cloud of thick white foam into the faces of the two thugs.
Blind and choking, they fired their weapons wildly into the ceiling.
I scrambled past them, sprinting down the hallway and out the back door into the freezing alley.
I rushed toward the delivery truck, holding the bag of antibiotics tightly against my chest.
My heart stopped completely when I saw the back doors of the truck swinging open in the wind.

The canvas laundry bags were torn apart.
Emily and Lily were gone, and Emily's blood-soaked bandage was lying on the wet pavement.
