Chapter 10 - The Unseen Shadow

The nightmare was finally over.

Margaret, Vanessa, and Greg were all placed in federal custody with no possibility of bail.

The Whitaker family empire was completely liquidated, the money scattered to charities across the globe.

The FBI relocated us to a beautiful, quiet safe house on a remote beach to wait for the trials.

For the first time in six years, I saw Emily truly smile as she watched Lily build a sandcastle by the water.

Her infection had healed, and the poison had been completely neutralized by the antidote.

I felt a profound sense of peace as I sat on the porch, sipping coffee and watching the sunset.

I opened my laptop one last time to permanently delete the files on Vanessa's flash drive.

As I was wiping the drive, I noticed a deeply encrypted folder hidden in the root directory that I had missed.

The file was simply titled "Emily's Mother".

Curiosity got the better of me, and I ran the decryption software to open the file.

A security video from ten years ago began to play on the screen.

It did not show a poor, sick woman dying in a trailer park.

It showed Emily's mother dressed in tactical gear, executing three men in a cartel warehouse.

The video zoomed in on the woman's collar, revealing a silver hairpin used as the infamous syndicate's rank token.

It was the exact same silver hairpin Vanessa had thrown in the trash.

I heard a soft click behind me in the quiet cabin.

I turned around to see Emily standing in the shadows, pointing a suppressed pistol directly at my chest.

Her sweet, loving expression was completely gone, replaced by the cold, dead eyes of an elite killer.

She tilted her head and whispered that I was really supposed to leave that folder alone.
