Chapter 9 - The IRS Sting

The collective gasp from Derek and Marlene was the most beautiful sound I had heard since my father passed away.
The elaborate trap I had meticulously built over the past six weeks had finally snapped perfectly shut around their greedy necks.
"That is entrapment!" Derek screamed, frantically backing away from the table as the undercover IRS agents surrounded him.
"It is only entrapment if we forced you to steal the money, but you clicked the transfer button all by yourself," the lead agent corrected.
Marlene tried to sneak quietly toward the heavy boardroom doors, hoping to escape the chaos unnoticed.
The federal commander effortlessly blocked her path, clamping a pair of cold steel handcuffs tightly around her wrists.
"Marlene, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy to commit extortion, and the first-degree murder of your late husband's father."
Marlene shrieked in absolute terror, wildly thrashing against the strong grip of the federal agents holding her arms.
"You have absolutely no proof that I killed him, it is her word against mine!" my mother-in-law shrieked hysterically.
I reached into the pocket of my pajama pants and pulled out a tiny, black digital recording device.
"I had a wire taped to my chest when you completely confessed to poisoning his tea in the alleyway," I revealed with cold satisfaction.
Marlene's knees buckled completely, and she collapsed sobbing onto the plush carpet of the executive boardroom.
Derek was fiercely pinned against the massive glass window by two IRS agents, his face pressed uncomfortably against the cold pane.
He looked at me with wild, desperate eyes, finally realizing that the woman he called useless had completely outsmarted him.
"Please, you have to tell them to stop, I am your husband and I love you!" Derek begged pathetically.
I walked up to him and stared directly into his terrified eyes without a single ounce of pity in my heart.
"You never loved me, you only loved the power my father built, and now you have absolutely nothing left."
The agents roughly hauled Derek away, reading him his Miranda rights as they dragged him toward the private elevator.
Elena placed a comforting hand on my shoulder, offering me a genuine, incredibly warm smile of victory.
"The accounts are officially frozen, the company is entirely yours again, and they will spend the rest of their lives in prison."
The nightmare that had consumed my life for the past two years was finally, definitively over in every possible way.
I thanked the federal commander and the undercover agents for their incredible bravery and precise execution of the sting operation.
For the first time in what felt like an eternity, I could finally take a deep, full breath of fresh, unburdened air.

I was ready to go home and begin the long, peaceful process of healing the deep wounds they had left behind.
However, the true depth of the darkness hiding within my family was far from completely uncovered.
