Chapter 3 - The Race Against Time

I stared at the fraudulent legal document in absolute horror, feeling the air completely leave my lungs.

Derek had brilliantly anticipated my escape and weaponized the corrupt legal system against me in record time.

"A judge cannot issue a conservatorship without a comprehensive psychological evaluation," Elena argued fiercely.

"My mother happens to be very close friends with the chief of psychiatry at this wonderful hospital," Derek sneered.

"He gladly signed a sworn affidavit stating that my grieving wife has suffered a total psychotic break."

If that conservatorship order was officially filed with the bank, I would lose all access to the trap I had set.

The federal funds would transfer freely into Marlene's offshore account without triggering the automated suspicious activity report.

"You are a monster," I whispered, my voice shaking with a mixture of deep betrayal and profound rage.

"I am a survivor, and you are officially a ward of the state," Derek corrected with a sickening grin.

He lunged forward to grab my arm, but Elena swiftly pulled a canister of pepper spray from her purse.

She sprayed a thick, blinding cloud of chemicals directly into my husband's arrogant face.

Derek screamed in sheer agony, dropping the fraudulent court order as he aggressively clawed at his burning eyes.

"Get in the car right now!" Elena yelled, shoving me toward the passenger side of her sedan.

I scrambled into the leather seat just as my attorney jumped behind the steering wheel and slammed the gas pedal.

The tires screeched loudly against the concrete as we sped toward the automated exit barrier of the parking garage.

"The courthouse opens at eight o'clock in the morning, which means that order isn't officially recorded yet," Elena explained breathlessly.

"We have exactly two hours to get to your primary bank branch and execute the federal trap manually."

I opened my laptop and connected it to the car's wireless hotspot to check the status of the transfer.

"The funds are currently sitting in a temporary escrow hold because of the massive transaction size," I noted with immense relief.

"If I physically walk into the bank and present my original identification, I can flag the transfer as an active federal crime."

Elena ran a red light, navigating the empty city streets with the terrifying speed of a seasoned getaway driver.

We pulled up to the towering glass building of my father's primary financial institution just as the sun began to rise.

The heavy glass doors were technically locked, but the branch manager was already inside preparing for the business day.

I pounded my fist against the glass until the sharply dressed manager looked up from his mahogany desk.

He immediately recognized me as his most prominent corporate client and rushed over to unlock the entrance.

"Please, I need to file an immediate fraud alert on the corporate development account," I pleaded breathlessly.

The branch manager offered a warm, comforting smile and gently guided me into his luxurious private office.

"Of course, please sit down and let me pull up your financial profile," he said reassuringly.

He typed a few keys on his computer, but his comforting smile slowly twisted into a cold, menacing smirk.

"I am afraid I cannot process any requests for you today, considering your husband called me thirty minutes ago."

The manager casually reached under his heavy mahogany desk and firmly pressed the silent emergency panic button.
