Chapter 5 - The Mother's Confession

I stared down the dark barrel of the suppressed handgun, feeling a chilling wave of pure terror wash over me.

Derek had not just bribed local bankers and doctors, he had managed to compromise a highly dangerous federal agent.

"If you kill me, the automated dead-man switch on my cloud server will release everything to the press," I bluffed smoothly.

Agent Davis hesitated for a fraction of a second, his finger resting lightly on the sensitive trigger of his weapon.

"I do not have the physical drive on me, my attorney Elena took it when the police arrived," I lied convincingly.

The corrupt agent cursed loudly and forcefully slammed his fist against the leather steering wheel of the SUV.

Before he could demand Elena's exact location, the rear passenger door of the vehicle was suddenly yanked open from the outside.

Marlene stood in the dimly lit alleyway, wearing an expensive fur coat and a triumphant, wicked smile.

"You always were a terrible liar, my dear daughter-in-law," my mother-in-law sneered as she climbed into the seat beside me.

She aggressively reached into the deep pocket of my winter coat and pulled out the small, silver encrypted flash drive.

"I saw you slip this into your pocket while the bank manager was talking," Marlene gloated proudly.

Agent Davis lowered his weapon and let out a heavy, irritated sigh of relief.

"Take the drive to Derek so he can finally wipe the master servers before the morning meeting," the agent instructed her.

Marlene examined the silver drive like it was a priceless diamond, her eyes gleaming with absolute, unchecked greed.

"You two truly thought you were so clever by trying to steal this company from right under our noses," I spat angrily.

"We didn't try to steal anything, we simply inherited what was rightfully ours," Marlene corrected with a sickening laugh.

"My father would have never given Derek voting control of his legacy in a million years," I argued fiercely.

Marlene leaned close to my ear, her expensive perfume smelling like toxic poison in the cramped space of the car.

"Your stubborn father absolutely refused to sign the transfer papers, which is exactly why I had to poison his evening tea."

My blood ran entirely cold as her horrific, monstrous confession echoed through the silent vehicle.

They hadn't just manipulated me and stolen my inheritance, they had actually murdered my beloved father in cold blood.

"You killed him," I whispered, hot tears of profound grief and boiling rage streaming down my bruised face.

"I removed an obstacle," Marlene smiled coldly before stepping back out into the freezing alleyway.

She slammed the car door shut, leaving me completely alone with the corrupt federal agent.

Agent Davis raised his gun again, aiming it perfectly between my weeping eyes.

"I am sorry it had to end this way, but you simply know too much," the corrupt agent whispered maliciously.
