Chapter 6 - The Hospital Ambush

Vance pushed the engine to its limits, weaving through traffic as we raced toward Atlanta General Hospital.
My heart hammered against my ribs, terrified for my son's life and the impending threat of Donald's men finding him first.
When we burst through the emergency room doors, my parents were huddled in a corner of the waiting room, looking frail and terrified.
"The doctors stabilized him, it was severe malnutrition and a bad infection," my father explained, his hands trembling.
I rushed toward the pediatric ward, finally able to see my beautiful boy sleeping peacefully with an IV in his arm.
For a brief moment, standing by his bedside, I felt a glimmer of hope that the worst was finally over.
That hope shattered when the double doors of the ward swung open, and Donald walked in, accompanied by two armed security guards.
He looked exactly like the photos he sent me, dressed in a sharp suit and wearing a mask of fake concern.
"There's my boy," Donald announced loudly, making sure every nurse in the room heard his desperate father act.
"Donald, don't you dare come near him," I warned, stepping between him and Keaton's bed.
Donald pulled a thick stack of official-looking documents from his briefcase and handed them to the head nurse.
"I have full, legal custody of this child, and this woman is a dangerous kidnapper who abandoned us five years ago," he lied smoothly.
The forged custody papers I had seen in Brenda's safe were now being weaponized against me in broad daylight.
"She is having a mental breakdown, and she stole my son from his loving home," Donald continued, shedding a fake tear.
I screamed at the nurses that he was lying, that he had abused my parents and starved our child.
But my frantic behavior only made me look exactly like the unstable woman Donald claimed I was.
Two heavy hands grabbed my shoulders, and I turned to see two uniformed police officers pulling out handcuffs.
"Alisha Meyer, you are under arrest for the kidnapping and endangerment of a minor," the officer said, snapping the cuffs onto my wrists.
May you like
I kicked and screamed as they dragged me away, forced to watch Donald place his hands on my sleeping son.
Donald looked at me over his shoulder, flashing a wicked, triumphant smile as the elevator doors closed between us.
