Chapter 1 - The Staged Life

I stared at the glowing screen of my phone, my blood running cold as Donald's message glared back at me.

The photograph showed my parents and my son sitting at a lavish dining table, their smiles stiff but convincing.

Yet, they were right here in front of me, huddled in a cheap Atlanta hotel room, wearing the clothes I had just bought them.

"Mom, how did he take this picture?" I asked, my voice trembling with a mix of rage and terror.

My mother flinched at the sound of my voice, clutching Keaton tighter against her chest.

"Big Mike comes for us once a month," she whispered, her eyes darting toward the locked hotel door as if the man might burst through it.

"He forces us into a van, takes us to a staged model home, and makes us put on nice clothes."

My father stared at the floor, shame radiating from his hunched shoulders.

"If we didn't smile, Big Mike said he would take Keaton away and leave him in the woods," my father added, his voice breaking.

I felt a physical pain in my chest, realizing that the thirty-five thousand dollars I sent every month had funded this elaborate psychological torture.

Donald hadn't just stolen my money; he had orchestrated a nightmare, keeping my family as hostages while living a life of luxury.

I needed to get them out of this city, but first, I needed to secure the remaining funds in my bank accounts.

I opened my banking app, intending to freeze the joint account I shared with my husband.

Before I could even type in my password, a heavy, rhythmic knock echoed against our hotel room door.

We all froze in place, the silence in the room suddenly deafening.

"Housekeeping," a deep, gruff voice called out from the hallway.

My mother let out a terrified gasp, her hands covering her mouth.

I crept toward the peephole and looked through the glass.

The man standing outside wasn't wearing a hotel uniform, and the massive gun holstered at his waist was clearly visible beneath his leather jacket.

I held my breath and pressed my back against the wall.

I knew instinctively that this was the man they called Big Mike.

Donald must have somehow figured out that I was back in the country.

The doorknob slowly began to turn, rattling violently as the lock held it in place.

"I know you're in there, Alisha," the gruff voice whispered through the crack in the door, sending a lethal chill down my spine.
