Chapter 10 - The House I Built

Donald froze in his tracks, his arrogant face draining of all color as he stared at the barrel of Big Mike's gun.

"What are you doing, Mike?" Donald stammered, pulling a terrified, weeping Keaton closer to his chest.

"Brenda pays my bills, not you," Big Mike sneered, stepping closer and demanding Donald drop the offshore account passwords.

While the two criminals turned on each other, Vance quietly slipped his phone from his pocket and flashed me a screen.

He had already bypassed Donald's security protocols using Brenda's files, and the offshore accounts were completely frozen.

"Nobody is getting that money," I announced loudly, stepping into the light to draw their attention away from my son.

Donald looked at me in pure shock, dropping his phone in a moment of utter disbelief.

That brief second of distraction was all I needed.

I charged up the stairs, tackling Donald with a ferocity I didn't know I possessed.

Keaton slipped from his grasp, and Vance instantly lunged forward to shield my son with his own body.

Red and blue police lights suddenly flooded through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, turning the foyer into a chaotic light show.

Vance had alerted his contacts the moment we left the airfield, and heavily armed tactical teams were now breaking down the back doors.

Big Mike dropped his weapon immediately, putting his hands on his head as officers swarmed the staircase.

Donald tried to run toward the balcony, but two officers tackled him to the marble floor, aggressively snapping handcuffs onto his wrists.

I ignored the chaos, dropping to my knees and pulling Keaton into the tightest, most desperate hug of my life.

"I've got you, baby, mommy is here," I sobbed, feeling his small arms finally wrap around my neck.

Three months later, the nightmare had completely transformed into a life I actually deserved.

Donald and Brenda were both facing twenty years in federal prison for racketeering, fraud, and child endangerment.

The courts had returned every penny of the stolen money to my name, allowing me to fully own the beautiful mansion.

My parents were living comfortably in the guest house, no longer looking over their shoulders in fear.

Keaton had gained healthy weight, his laughter finally filling the echoing halls of our new home.

We were safe, we were together, and the dark shadows of the past five years had finally been washed away.

It was a perfectly sunny afternoon, and I was cleaning out the last of Donald's junk from the basement storage room.

Hidden behind a loose brick in the wall, I found a small, black metal lockbox covered in dust.

I pried it open with a screwdriver, expecting to find more of his fake financial documents.

Instead, inside was a life insurance policy on Keaton's life, dated perfectly for the day I had returned from Miami.

The horrifying detail wasn't the multi-million dollar payout, but the name listed proudly as the sole beneficiary.

It wasn't Donald or Brenda; the name printed in crisp black ink was my own father's.
