Chapter 4 - The Mother-in-Law's Secret

I stared at the insurance document, the reality of my husband's plan sinking in with horrifying clarity.
They didn't just want me to take the fall for their fraud; they wanted me dead before I could ever ask questions.
"Donald knew you were coming home, and he prepared for it," Vance said, closing the laptop quickly.
"I need to get into Brenda's house and find the original copies of these documents," I insisted, my fear rapidly turning into blinding rage.
Vance told me it was too dangerous, but I knew Brenda kept a fireproof safe in her home office where she hid everything of value.
We waited until the early hours of the morning, parking two blocks away from Brenda's sprawling suburban estate.
The house was magnificent, paid for entirely with the sweat, blood, and tears I had shed working in Miami.
I used an old spare key Donald had given me years ago, praying they hadn't changed the locks on the back patio door.
The lock clicked, and I slipped silently into the dark kitchen, the familiar smell of Brenda's expensive perfume lingering in the air.
I crept down the hallway, avoiding the floorboards I remembered were prone to creaking.
The door to her home office was ajar, and I slipped inside, turning on a small penlight.
I found the safe hidden behind a large oil painting, just as I remembered.
Using the birthdate of Donald's deceased father, a code Brenda used for everything, I heard the heavy locking mechanism disengage.
Inside, I found a mountain of evidence, including forged custody papers that signed Keaton's legal rights entirely over to Brenda.
I began taking pictures of every document with my phone, securing the proof Vance needed to destroy them.
Suddenly, the lights in the office flipped on, blinding me momentarily.
I spun around to see Brenda standing in the doorway, perfectly dressed in her silk robe.

She didn't look surprised to see me, a sinister smile spreading across her perfectly manicured face.
"You always were too smart for your own good, Alisha," she sneered, raising a silver revolver and pointing it directly at my chest.
