Chapter 5 - The Narrow Escape

I froze, my hands slowly rising into the air as I stared down the barrel of Brenda's gun.
"You ruined my family," I said, trying to keep my voice steady while secretly pressing the record button on my phone inside my pocket.
"You ruined yourself the moment you trusted my son," Brenda laughed, stepping closer and waving the gun.
"Did you really think a woman like Ashley would settle for a man with a beggar's child and an absent wife?"
She confessed to everything on tape, bragging about how they used my money to build their empire and starved my parents for fun.
"And now, you've broken into my home, and I will have to shoot an intruder in self-defense," she said, her finger tightening on the trigger.
I knew I had only one chance, so I grabbed the heavy metal safe door and slammed it shut with all my might.
The loud, echoing bang startled Brenda, causing her to instinctively flinch and fire a shot into the ceiling.
I lunged forward, knocking the gun from her frail hand and shoving her hard against the mahogany desk.
I sprinted down the hallway, bursting through the front door just as neighborhood dogs began to bark at the gunshot.
Vance was already pulling his vehicle up to the curb, tires screeching as I threw myself into the passenger seat.
"Drive!" I screamed, checking to make sure my phone had successfully saved the audio recording.
We sped off into the night, the recorded confession serving as the final nail in their collective coffin.
"With this audio and the photos of the documents, we have enough to go to the authorities," Vance said, a victorious grin on his face.
We finally had the upper hand, and I could almost taste the sweet justice that was coming for my husband.
Just as we merged onto the highway, Vance's phone rang with an emergency alert from the safehouse.
Vance put it on speaker, and my father's panicked voice filled the car.
"Alisha, it's Keaton, he collapsed and he's barely breathing!" my father yelled over the sound of my mother sobbing.

"We had to call an ambulance, they are taking him to Atlanta General Hospital right now."
My blood ran cold, knowing that checking him into a public hospital would instantly alert Donald and Big Mike to his exact location.
