Chapter 7 - Ash and Embers

I watched the flames consume thirty-four years of memories in absolute horror.

Everything I owned was turning into gray ash before my eyes.

David stood safely on the opposite curb, completely mesmerized by the fire he had started.

"He is burning the original trust documents," Jack stated grimly from the driver's seat.

"He thinks he won," I whispered, feeling a dangerous surge of anger replace my grief.

Jack pulled out a heavily modified tablet computer from his tactical bag.

"I still have a backdoor into the company's internal server network," Jack said, his fingers flying across the keyboard.

"What are you looking for?" I asked, watching the code scroll rapidly on the screen.

"I am tracing where David actually sent that offshore money," Jack explained.

A few moments later, Jack gasped in shock.

"This is much worse than corporate theft, Eleanor," Jack said, turning the screen toward me.

The financial records showed David had been funneling massive amounts of cash for months.

"He didn't just steal from the operating accounts," Jack revealed.

"What did he do?" I asked, completely dreading the answer.

"David used the company as a front to launder money for a violent drug cartel," Jack explained.

David had lost millions of the cartel's money in bad investments and was trying to use the stolen operating funds to pay them back.

Suddenly, a loud alert pinged on Jack's tablet.

"I just intercepted a text message sent to David's phone," Jack said.

Jack read the message aloud, his voice tense.

"The cartel boss says the offshore transfer bounced because the bank flagged it for fraud."

My stunt at the bank had caused the system to freeze the transaction entirely.

David didn't have the cartel's money.

"The message says they are meeting David at the company headquarters tonight to collect the debt," Jack read.

"Or they are going to kill him," Jack added softly.

I looked at my burning house, then at the son who had tried to destroy me.

"Let's go to the office," I commanded firmly.

Jack looked at me like I was insane.

"We are walking into a cartel execution," Jack warned.
