Chapter 4 - The Flash Drive

The phone slipped from my trembling fingers and clattered onto the coffee shop table.

I thanked the confused woman and rushed back out onto the busy sidewalk.

Robert had been my husband's best friend for twenty years.

If Robert had betrayed us, the trust documents protecting the company were absolutely worthless.

I had nowhere to go and no one I could trust.

Suddenly, a black SUV pulled up sharply to the curb beside me.

The passenger door flew open.

"Get in, Mrs. Vance!" a gruff voice commanded.

I looked inside and saw Jack, the former head of corporate security whom David had unjustly fired last month.

I didn't hesitate to climb into the vehicle.

Jack slammed his foot on the gas pedal, merging seamlessly into the heavy traffic.

"How did you find me?" I asked, completely out of breath.

"Mara called me from a burner phone before David confiscated everything in the office," Jack explained.

"Is Mara okay?" I asked worriedly.

"She is fine, but she told me you were in serious trouble," Jack said.

"David drained the accounts and framed me for it," I confessed.

Jack nodded grimly, keeping his eyes on the road.

"Your husband knew David was planning something bad," Jack revealed.

I stared at him in shock.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

Jack reached into his jacket pocket and handed me a small, encrypted flash drive.

"Your husband gave this to me the day before he went into the hospital," Jack said.

"What is on it?" I asked, staring at the small piece of metal.

"It is a hidden recording from a camera your husband installed in his own office," Jack replied.

Jack pulled a laptop from the backseat and plugged the drive in.

He opened a video file and handed the computer to me.

The video showed David and Robert standing in my husband's office late at night.

"The poison is untraceable," Robert was saying on the screen.

"Just make sure the trust documents have the loophole we discussed," David replied in the video.

I felt my entire world collapse in an instant.

My husband hadn't died from a sudden heart attack.
