Chapter 3 - The Setup

I stared at the two approaching police officers in absolute disbelief.

My own flesh and blood was trying to send me to prison.

"You know I would never steal from my own employees," I told the bank manager.

"The paperwork says otherwise, Eleanor," Mr. Harrison replied apologetically.

I had to make a choice in a fraction of a second.

If I let them arrest me, David would have total control of the narrative and the business.

I could not fight him from a jail cell.

"Excuse me," I said, stepping backward out of the manager's office.

"Ma'am, please wait right there," one of the police officers called out.

I did not wait.

I turned and sprinted toward the back hallway reserved for bank employees.

"Stop her!" the officer yelled, his heavy boots pounding on the marble floor.

I pushed through the swinging doors into the employee breakroom.

I grabbed a discarded catering tray from a table and hurled it directly into their path.

The metal tray clattered loudly, causing the officers to stumble for just a moment.

I slipped out the emergency fire exit, triggering a blaring alarm.

The heavy metal door slammed shut behind me, locking automatically.

I found myself in a dark, narrow alleyway smelling of rain and garbage.

I ran blindly until my lungs burned and my legs felt like lead.

I finally ducked into a crowded coffee shop two blocks away to catch my breath.

I needed help, and I needed a phone.

I asked a kind-looking woman at a table if I could borrow her cell phone for a local call.

She handed it to me with a sympathetic smile.

I dialed the private number for my husband's attorney, Robert.

Robert had drafted the trust documents and was the only person who could prove my innocence.

The phone rang three times before someone picked up.

"Robert, thank God," I gasped out.

"Robert is not available right now," a chillingly familiar voice replied.

It was David.

May you like

"Why are you answering his phone?" I asked, my heart hammering in my chest.

"Because Robert works for me now, Mom," David laughed.
