Chapter 5 - The Devil's Advocate

I clamped my hand over my mouth to stifle a scream of pure agony.
The men I had fed at my own dining table had plotted to murder the love of my life.
"We have to take this to the police immediately," I told Jack, tears streaming down my face.
"We can't," Jack replied, his jaw clenched tight.
"Why not?" I demanded.
"Because Robert is a former federal prosecutor with half the police department in his pocket," Jack explained.
If we walked into a precinct, the flash drive would conveniently disappear.
"We need to get a confession out of Robert directly," Jack suggested.
It was incredibly dangerous, but it was the only option we had.
Jack drove us to the underground parking garage of Robert's luxury apartment building.
We slipped past the security desk and took the service elevator to the penthouse floor.
Jack picked the lock on the front door with terrifying speed.
We stepped into the dark, silent apartment.
"Well, this is an unexpected surprise," a calm voice echoed from the living room.
Robert was sitting in a leather armchair in the dark, holding a crystal glass of whiskey.
He did not look surprised at all.
"You murdered my husband," I said, stepping into the dim light.
Robert took a slow sip of his drink and smiled.
"Your husband was too stubborn to sell the company to a private equity firm," Robert stated casually.
"So you killed him for a commission?" I asked in disgust.
"David promised me ten million dollars from the sale," Robert corrected.
"I have you on video planning the murder," I threatened, holding up the flash drive.
Robert chuckled softly and placed his glass on the table.
"That is very impressive, Eleanor," Robert mocked.
He reached into his tailored suit jacket.
He pulled out a heavy, silenced pistol and aimed it directly at my chest.

"Unfortunately, you broke into my home and I had to shoot you in self-defense," Robert smiled.
He pulled the trigger.
