Chapter 6 - The Great Escape

The deafening crack of the gunshot shattered the silence in the penthouse.

I braced for the impact, but the pain never came.

Jack had thrown his massive body in front of me at the exact last second.

The bullet tore through Jack's shoulder, spinning him backward into a glass table.

The table shattered loudly, sending shards of glass flying across the expensive rug.

Robert cursed and adjusted his aim to finish us both off.

I grabbed a heavy bronze lamp from the side table and hurled it at Robert's head.

The heavy metal struck his wrist, knocking the gun out of his hand.

"Run!" Jack yelled, scrambling to his feet despite the bleeding wound.

We burst out of the apartment and sprinted toward the emergency stairwell.

I could hear Robert shouting curses as we descended the concrete steps.

We made it to the parking garage and jumped back into the black SUV.

Jack hit the gas, smashing through the wooden exit gate into the busy street.

"You need a hospital," I panicked, looking at his blood-soaked shirt.

"It went clean through, I will be fine," Jack grunted, gripping the steering wheel.

"Where are we going?" I asked, my heart still racing violently.

"We need to go to your house to get the original physical copy of the trust," Jack said.

The original document had the real signatures, free of Robert's deadly loopholes.

My husband had hidden it in a wall safe behind our bedroom mirror.

We sped through the city limits toward my quiet suburban neighborhood.

As we turned onto my street, the smell of thick, toxic smoke filled the air.

I rolled down the window, coughing as black ash drifted into the car.

Jack slammed on the brakes, stopping abruptly in the middle of the road.

My beautiful home, the place where I had raised my family, was engulfed in a massive inferno.

The roof was already collapsing into the living room.

Standing on the sidewalk across the street, watching the destruction with a cruel smile, was David.
