Chapter 7 - The Hunt

Arthur’s face hardened into a mask of pure, absolute determination.
“Lock down the hospital completely,” Arthur commanded into the phone.
“Nobody gets in or out without full biometric screening, and post armed guards at Mia’s room immediately.”
He ended the call and turned to Caleb, who had gone completely rigid with fear.
“Vanessa escaped,” Caleb whispered, his voice trembling.
“She knows Mia is the only leverage she has against us.”
Arthur quickly grabbed his heavy winter coat from the closet and tossed Caleb his jacket.
“We are not going to sit here and wait for her to strike,” Arthur stated firmly.
“We are going to find her before she even gets close to this building.”
They rushed out of the hospital room, flanked by two massive private security contractors.
Arthur led them down to the underground parking garage, where his heavily armored luxury SUV was waiting.
“Where could she possibly go?” Caleb asked as he climbed into the passenger seat.
“She doesn't have Julian, she has no money, and she is the most wanted fugitive in the city.”
Arthur started the powerful engine and sped out of the dark garage into the freezing Chicago rain.
“She is arrogant and incredibly predictable,” Arthur explained, his eyes fixed intensely on the road ahead.
“She will go straight to the one place she feels absolutely safe and completely in control.”
Arthur navigated the treacherous, rain-slicked highway toward the wealthy suburbs of Naperville.
He was driving directly toward his own sprawling, multi-million dollar estate.
“Why would she go back to the house?” Caleb asked, completely confused by the dangerous strategy.
“The police will be swarming the property looking for her.”
Arthur offered a grim, knowing smile as he took a sharp exit off the main highway.
“The police only know about the primary residence,” Arthur replied smoothly.
“They have absolutely no idea about the hidden panic bunker I built beneath the guest house.”
They arrived at the massive iron gates of the Vance estate, which were completely surrounded by flashing police cruisers.
Arthur completely bypassed the main entrance and drove down a dark, unpaved utility road hidden by thick pine trees.
He parked the SUV near a small, seemingly abandoned gardening shed near the edge of the sprawling property.
“Stay close, and do not make a sound,” Arthur instructed, pulling a heavy tactical flashlight from the glove compartment.
He walked cautiously toward the shed, with Caleb and the two armed contractors following closely behind.
Arthur punched a highly complex code into a hidden digital keypad concealed beneath a false wooden panel.
The floor of the shed hissed loudly, slowly descending to reveal a brightly lit, concrete underground bunker.
They quietly descended the metal stairs, their footsteps completely muffled by the heavy rain outside.
The bunker was incredibly luxurious, stocked with emergency supplies, weapons, and a massive secure vault.
Sitting on a leather couch in the center of the room, desperately counting massive stacks of emergency cash, was Vanessa.
She looked up, her eyes widening in absolute, unadulterated horror as Arthur stepped into the light.
“Arthur?” she gasped, dropping the money onto the floor in pure shock.
“But I saw you die!”
Arthur walked slowly toward her, his expression completely devoid of any remaining mercy.
“You saw exactly what I wanted you to see, Vanessa,” Arthur stated coldly.
Vanessa frantically reached for a heavy silver pistol resting on the coffee table.
Before her fingers could even touch the weapon, one of the security contractors fired a single, precise shot.
The bullet shattered the heavy glass coffee table, completely destroying the pistol.
Vanessa screamed and backed away, completely trapped against the cold concrete wall of the bunker.
“It is completely over, Vanessa,” Arthur declared, standing triumphantly over his treacherous wife.
“You lost the money, you lost Julian, and you are going to spend the rest of your life in a federal cage.”
Vanessa stared at him, her chest heaving as a twisted, desperate laugh suddenly escaped her lips.
“You really think you are the smartest man in the room, Arthur,” Vanessa mocked, her eyes burning with pure malice.
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, blinking detonator switch.
“I may have lost the money, but I am absolutely not going to prison,” she sneered.
“I wired the entire main house with high-grade military explosives when you were first admitted to the hospital.”
Arthur completely froze, his heart dropping into his stomach as he realized the true scale of her psychotic plan.
“The police are currently searching the main house,” Arthur panicked.
“There are over thirty innocent officers inside that building right now!”
Vanessa smiled wickedly, her thumb resting dangerously close to the activation button.

“Then I guess you have a very difficult choice to make, darling,” Vanessa laughed coldly.
“Let me walk out of here with the cash, or watch thirty innocent men burn to ashes.”
