Chapter 3 - The Arrest

Vanessa screamed in absolute shock as the armed detectives completely surrounded her.

The plastic cup dropped from her manicured hand, spilling the remaining poisoned water onto the sterile linoleum floor.

"Vanessa Vance, you are under arrest for the attempted murder of Arthur Vance," the lead detective roared, violently slamming her against the wall.

"This is insane!" Vanessa shrieked, struggling fiercely against the cold steel handcuffs biting into her wrists.

"I am his devoted wife!"

"He is having a massive heart attack, you incompetent fools, help him!"

Medical personnel flooded into the chaotic room, pushing past the struggling suspect and the detectives.

They swarmed around Arthur's bed, shouting urgent medical commands as the cardiac monitor wailed in a continuous, terrifying tone.

"Clear!" a doctor shouted, pressing heavy defibrillator paddles directly onto Arthur's chest.

Arthur's body violently convulsed off the mattress, but the monitor remained completely flat.

"We are losing him, push another round of epinephrine!" the frantic doctor commanded.

Vanessa watched the desperate medical intervention, a vicious, triumphant smirk slowly replacing her panic.

"You cannot arrest me for murder if you do not have any actual proof," Vanessa sneered at the detective holding her arms.

"I was just giving my dying husband a final drink of fresh water."

Caleb stepped forward, completely ignoring the chaotic medical emergency unfolding on the bed.

He held up the digital tablet, the screen glowing brightly in the dim hospital room.

"We have absolute proof, Mrs. Vance," Caleb said, his voice steady despite his obvious terror.

He pressed play on the tablet.

The high-definition hidden camera footage perfectly captured Vanessa explaining the concentrated digoxin and pouring it into the water cup.

The crystal-clear audio echoed loudly through the crowded room.

Vanessa's face instantly drained of all color, transforming into a mask of pure, unadulterated horror.

"Where did that camera come from?" she gasped, her eyes darting frantically around the room.

"It was hidden inside the smoke detector directly above the bed," the lead detective explained grimly.

"Mr. Vance authorized the installation this morning with his attorney present."

"You are going to prison for the rest of your miserable life, Vanessa."

The medical team continued their frantic efforts, shocking Arthur's chest a third time.

But it was entirely too late.

The lead doctor slowly stepped back, checking his watch with a heavy, defeated sigh.

"Time of death, 11:42 AM," the doctor announced quietly.

A profound, heavy silence fell over the chaotic room.

Arthur Vance, the brilliant billionaire who built an empire from absolutely nothing, was officially dead.

Vanessa stopped struggling against the handcuffs and let out a cold, chilling laugh.

"He is dead," she stated, looking directly at Caleb with absolute malice.

"He is completely dead, and I am still his legal, surviving spouse."

The lead detective frowned deeply, confused by her sudden, terrifying arrogance.

"You are under arrest for his murder, you psychopath," the detective reminded her harshly.

"It does not matter," Vanessa smiled wickedly, her eyes gleaming with greed.

"I will hire the best, most expensive defense attorneys in the entire country."

"I will claim temporary insanity, immense caregiver stress, or a simple tragic accident."

"And while the trial drags on for years, I will still inherit his eighty-two million dollar fortune."

She looked down at the dead man lying on the hospital bed and spat on the floor.

"He died knowing I beat him," she bragged.

Richard Sterling, the attorney, finally stepped into the room, his face pale and serious.

He adjusted his glasses and looked at Vanessa with absolute, unmitigated disgust.

"You are not going to inherit a single dime, Vanessa," Richard stated firmly.

Vanessa laughed again, completely unbothered by the attorney's threat.

"I am the sole beneficiary of his entire estate, Richard," she sneered.

"I have seen the iron-clad will he signed three years ago."

Richard reached into his leather briefcase and pulled out the freshly notarized legal documents Arthur had signed that morning.

"Arthur completely revoked that will at 10:15 AM today," Richard announced loudly.

"He legally transferred every single asset, property, and corporate holding into a new, irrevocable trust."

Vanessa's confident smile instantly vanished, replaced by a sudden, sickening panic.

"Who is the primary beneficiary of the new trust?" she demanded, her voice cracking violently.

Richard slowly turned and pointed a finger directly at the exhausted young hospital orderly standing by the door.

"The sole heir to the eighty-two million dollar fortune is Caleb Miller," Richard confirmed.

Vanessa let out a massive, blood-curdling scream of pure, absolute rage.

But before she could lunge at Caleb, her cell phone began ringing loudly inside her confiscated handbag.

The lead detective pulled the phone out and looked at the glowing screen.

"It is a text message from a man named Julian," the detective read aloud.

"He says, 'The money has been successfully transferred to the offshore account. I am leaving without you.'"
