Chapter 2 - The Final Dose

The attorney, Richard Sterling, stared at Arthur with wide, terrified eyes.

"Are you absolutely certain about this, Arthur?" Richard asked, clutching his leather briefcase tightly against his chest.

"I have the audio recording of her confession right here," Arthur rasped, pointing a shaking finger at his cell phone on the bedside table.

"I turned on the voice memo app the moment I heard her talking in the hallway."

Richard immediately grabbed the phone, his face turning pale as he listened to Vanessa's cold, calculating confession.

The recording was crystal clear, capturing every single horrific detail of her lethal poisoning plot.

"This is incredibly damning evidence, Arthur," Richard said, his voice trembling with a mixture of professional awe and personal horror.

"We need to contact the homicide division immediately and request protective custody."

"No," Arthur commanded, using every ounce of his remaining strength to sit up slightly in the bed.

"If the police arrest her now, she will hire the best defense lawyers in the state and drag this out for years."

"She might even walk free on a technicality."

Arthur fell back against the pillows, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps.

"I am going to die anyway, Richard."

"My heart is completely failing."

"But I want to make absolutely sure she spends the rest of her miserable life rotting in a concrete cell."

"I need you to let her give me the final dose."

Richard shook his head frantically, horrified by the morbid, dangerous suggestion.

"I cannot legally or morally allow you to be murdered, Arthur!" the attorney protested loudly.

"I am already a dead man," Arthur replied with chilling, undeniable logic.

"But if she administers the final dose on hidden camera, there will be absolutely no defense, no technicality, and no escape."

Before Richard could argue further, the heavy hospital door slowly began to open.

Richard quickly shoved the cell phone and the newly signed will into his briefcase, snapping it shut just as Vanessa walked into the room.

Vanessa was wearing a stunning, incredibly expensive black designer dress, completely inappropriate for a morning hospital visit.

She looked at Richard with a cold, suspicious glare.

"Who are you, and what are you doing in my husband's private room?" Vanessa demanded, crossing her arms defensively.

"I am Dr. Sterling, a specialized cardiology consultant brought in for a second opinion," Richard lied smoothly, his years of courtroom experience finally kicking in.

"And what is your professional opinion, Doctor?" Vanessa asked, a cruel, mocking smile playing on her lips.

Richard looked at Arthur, his heart breaking for the dying man who had built such an incredible empire.

"His heart is failing rapidly," Richard stated grimly.

"He likely will not make it through the night."

Vanessa's eyes flashed with absolute, unrestrained triumph.

"Thank you, Doctor," Vanessa said, stepping aside to let him pass.

"I would like some privacy to say my final goodbyes to my beloved husband."

Richard hesitated, glancing nervously at Arthur.

Arthur gave a nearly imperceptible nod, silently commanding his loyal friend to leave.

Richard walked out of the room, his hands shaking violently as he pulled out his cell phone to dial the lead detective he trusted.

Inside the quiet hospital room, Vanessa locked the door and walked slowly toward the bed.

She reached into her expensive designer handbag and pulled out a small, unmarked glass vial filled with a clear liquid.

"I heard the good doctor, Arthur," Vanessa whispered, her voice dripping with lethal excitement.

"But I really do not want to wait all night."

"Julian is waiting for me at the airport, and I want to celebrate properly."

She picked up the plastic cup of water resting on Arthur's bedside table.

Arthur watched silently as she carefully unscrewed the cap of the vial.

"This is concentrated digoxin," she explained casually, as if she were reading a grocery list.

"It will trigger a massive, immediate cardiac arrest."

"The doctors will simply assume your weakened heart finally gave out."

She poured the entire contents of the vial into the water cup and stirred it gently with a plastic straw.

"Drink up, darling," Vanessa smiled, holding the cup directly to his dry lips.

Arthur looked into the eyes of the woman he had loved completely for four years.

He saw absolutely nothing but cold, empty greed.

He opened his mouth and allowed her to tip the poisoned water down his throat.

Vanessa watched him swallow, her smile widening into a twisted grin of pure victory.

"Goodbye, Arthur," she whispered, stepping back to watch the heart monitor.

The green lines on the screen instantly began to spike violently, racing in an uncontrollable, chaotic rhythm.

Arthur clutched his chest, a massive, crushing pain radiating through his entire body.

Vanessa laughed softly, a cruel, beautiful monster watching her masterpiece unfold.

But her laughter abruptly died when the hospital room door violently exploded inward.

Four heavily armed police detectives swarmed into the room, their weapons drawn and aimed directly at her chest.

And standing right behind them, holding a small digital tablet displaying the live hidden camera feed, was young Caleb Miller.
