Chapter 6 - The Lazarus Protocol

Caleb completely froze, unable to comprehend what was happening right in front of him.

Arthur Vance, the man whose heart had completely stopped on the medical monitor thirty minutes ago, slowly sat up in the hospital bed.

Julian stumbled backward, his arrogant smile instantly vanishing, replaced by a look of absolute, unadulterated terror.

"You... you are completely dead!" Julian stammered, aiming his pistol frantically between Arthur and Caleb.

Arthur calmly pulled the heart monitor leads off his chest and tossed them onto the mattress.

"I am incredibly wealthy, Julian," Arthur said, his voice surprisingly strong and entirely steady.

"Did you really think I wouldn't use my money to ensure my own survival?"

Caleb watched in absolute shock as Arthur swung his legs over the side of the bed.

"But... the digoxin," Caleb whispered, his mind desperately trying to make sense of the impossible reality.

"The doctor declared your time of death."

Arthur offered Caleb a grim, reassuring smile.

"The doctor you saw earlier was an actor I hired to replace my actual cardiologist," Arthur explained smoothly.

"The liquid Vanessa poured into my water cup was perfectly harmless saline."

"My security team swapped the toxic vial in her designer handbag while she was distracted in the waiting room."

Julian gripped his pistol tighter, his hands shaking violently as his master plan completely unraveled.

"You faked your own death to trap us," Julian realized, his voice trembling with sheer panic.

"I needed to know exactly who was working with her, and how far you were willing to go," Arthur stated coldly.

Arthur pressed a hidden button underneath his mattress, instantly unlocking the hospital room door.

"The hospital room is surrounded by heavily armed private security contractors," Arthur warned Julian.

"Drop the weapon and hand over the briefcase, or they will completely destroy you."

Julian frantically looked at the heavy wooden door, realizing he was entirely trapped.

He knew he was facing multiple life sentences for assault, attempted murder, and massive financial fraud.

In a desperate, incredibly reckless move, Julian aimed his weapon directly at Arthur's chest and pulled the trigger.

The suppressed pistol fired with a sharp, muffled pop.

Caleb screamed and dove across the room, desperately trying to shield the older man.

But the bullet never even reached Arthur.

It ricocheted harmlessly off a transparent, incredibly thin sheet of bulletproof ballistic glass completely surrounding the hospital bed.

Julian stared at the shattered glass in pure disbelief, his weapon entirely useless against the hidden defense system.

Before Julian could fire another shot, the hospital room door violently exploded inward.

Four heavily armed tactical contractors stormed into the room, their weapons aimed directly at the desperate criminal.

"Drop it now!" the lead contractor roared, kicking the pistol violently from Julian's hand.

They tackled Julian brutally to the floor, instantly slapping heavy steel zip-ties around his wrists.

Arthur slowly stood up from the bed, stepping safely out from behind the bulletproof shield.

He walked over to the struggling criminal and calmly retrieved his stolen leather briefcase.

"You completely underestimated me, Julian," Arthur said, his voice dripping with absolute contempt.

"You thought because my heart was damaged, my mind was weak."

Arthur turned to his lead security contractor and nodded sharply.

"Hand him over to the federal authorities waiting in the lobby," Arthur ordered.

"Make absolutely sure they know he assaulted Richard Sterling."

They dragged a cursing, weeping Julian out of the room, leaving Arthur and Caleb alone in the quiet hospital wing.

Caleb collapsed into a chair, completely overwhelmed and shaking from the intense adrenaline crash.

"I don't understand any of this, Mr. Vance," Caleb admitted, rubbing his tired eyes.

Arthur opened the leather briefcase and pulled out the newly signed will, completely unharmed.

"I told you I was leaving you my entire fortune, Caleb," Arthur said softly.

"But I never actually said I was going to die today."

Arthur reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, highly classified medical file.

"I found a donor for my heart transplant, Caleb, and the surgery is scheduled for exactly four hours from now."

Arthur handed the file to the stunned young orderly, pointing to the name on the second page.

"And while my team was searching for my donor, they also found a perfect match for your sister, Mia."

Caleb stared at the medical file, tears of pure, absolute joy streaming freely down his face.

"She is going to live?" Caleb choked out, unable to believe the miraculous news.

"She is going to live a very long, perfectly healthy life," Arthur promised sincerely.

But before they could celebrate the incredible victory, Arthur's private cell phone suddenly began to ring.

Arthur answered the call, his face turning completely pale as he listened to the voice on the other end.

"Mr. Vance, we have a massive problem," the lead security contractor reported urgently.

"Vanessa managed to escape police custody during the transport to the precinct, and she is heavily armed."
