Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

I stared at the television screen in absolute, paralyzing shock.

The beautiful estate I had purchased for my parents was completely engulfed in orange flames.

The news anchor grimly confirmed that the two deceased individuals were a man and a woman.

"Greg tied up loose ends," Daniel murmured, his face completely pale.

"He murdered Claire to ensure she could never testify against him."

I felt a sickening wave of grief mixed tightly with pure, unadulterated rage.

My sister had betrayed me in the worst possible way, but she did not deserve to burn alive.

My phone suddenly buzzed with an incoming video call from an unknown, encrypted number.

I accepted the call, and Greg's smiling, arrogant face appeared on the small screen.

He was sitting comfortably in the leather seat of a luxurious private jet.

"It is such a shame about your lovely childhood home, Mara," Greg mocked cruelly.

"Claire was incredibly sloppy, and she became a massive liability to my corporate vision."

"You are a monster, and the police are already tracking your flight path," I shot back fiercely.

Greg let out a dark, booming laugh that chilled me to the bone.

"I am currently flying over international waters, heading to a country with zero extradition treaties."

"I will take full control of the company board in absentia tomorrow morning."

He leaned closer to the camera, his eyes gleaming with malicious triumph.

"You might have survived the crash, but I still won the war."

He abruptly ended the call, leaving the screen completely black.

I gripped the arms of my wheelchair so tightly that my knuckles turned completely white.

Daniel placed a reassuring hand gently onto my shaking shoulder.

"He thinks he is untouchable, but he made one massive, fatal mistake," Daniel said quietly.

I looked up at my attorney, desperate for any shred of genuine hope.

"What mistake did he make?" I asked eagerly.

Daniel pulled a flash drive perfectly out of his suit pocket and plugged it into his tablet.

"He completely forgot that David installed a dead-man's switch in the company's master server."
