Chapter 7 - The Interrogation

The deafening echo of the gunshot caused a massive ringing in my ears.
My security team instantly returned fire into the absolute darkness of the parking garage.
I curled my broken body protectively over my sleeping babies, praying for a miracle.
Suddenly, the blinding headlights of an approaching SUV cut through the shadows.
The vehicle smashed violently into the concrete pillar where the shooter was hiding.
The attacker collapsed onto the ground, dropping his weapon with a loud clatter.
The emergency backup lights flickered on, revealing the identity of our unexpected savior.
It was my father, sitting behind the wheel of the luxury SUV I had leased for him.
He stepped out of the damaged vehicle with his hands raised high in the air.
The security guards immediately surrounded him, their weapons drawn and ready.
"I am not here to hurt her!" my father shouted desperately over the chaos.
"I followed Claire's hired thug here to stop him from doing something terrible."
Daniel cautiously stepped forward and ordered the guards to lower their weapons.
The police arrived seconds later, swarming the garage and arresting the wounded hitman.
We retreated safely back into a secure conference room on the top floor of the hospital.
My father sat across from me at the large wooden table, looking older and more defeated than ever.
"Why did you save me?" I asked coldly, refusing to let him see my lingering fear.
My father stared down at his trembling hands, tears spilling freely onto the polished wood.
"We wanted your money, Mara, but I never wanted you dead," he confessed brokenly.
"Claire was the one who orchestrated the crash."
"She needed you gone so she could inherit the entire trust fund and pay off her massive debts."
I recorded his entire confession on my phone, ensuring I had everything I needed to destroy her.
"Where is Claire right now?" Daniel demanded, pulling out his legal notepad.
My father wiped his face and looked up with an expression of pure terror.

"She is currently emptying the holding company safe, planning to flee the country tonight."
"But she is not working alone."
