Chapter 2 - The Parasites Panic

The monitor beside my bed began to beep rapidly as my heart rate spiked.
I stared at the highlighted name on the financial document in pure disbelief.
The man who had nearly ended my life was secretly on my sister's payroll.
"Are you telling me this crash was intentional?" I whispered, my voice trembling with horror.
Daniel took the paper back and placed it carefully into his secure briefcase.
"I have already contacted a private investigator to look into the truck driver's background."
Before he could say another word, a loud commotion erupted in the hospital hallway.
I could hear my mother's shrill voice echoing off the sterile walls.
"Do you know who I am?" Susan screamed at the poor security guard.
"My daughter is in there, and she is clearly suffering from a traumatic brain injury!"
My father's voice joined the chaotic shouting, demanding access to my room immediately.
Daniel stood up and calmly locked the heavy wooden door of my private suite.
"I hired private security for you, so they will not be allowed inside," he assured me.
I watched through the small rectangular window in the door as two large guards physically restrained my father.
My mother caught my eye through the glass, her face twisted in absolute rage.
She held up her declined black credit card and mouthed a string of vicious curses at me.
I pressed the button to close the electronic blinds, completely shutting them out of my sight.
Elena, the kind nurse from earlier, slipped through the connecting door from the nursery.
She was carrying a small, colorful bouquet of flowers and a sympathetic smile.
"Your babies are doing perfectly fine, Mara," she said gently.
"But a social worker just arrived at the front desk downstairs."
I frowned in confusion, a cold knot of dread forming in my stomach.
"Why would a social worker be here for my children?"

Elena looked down at the floor, her hands gripping the plastic vase tightly.
"Your parents just filed an emergency petition to take custody of Noah and Lily."
