Chapter 8 - The Twisted Web

I leaned forward in my wheelchair, ignoring the sharp pain shooting through my ribs.
"Who exactly is helping my sister?" I demanded, my voice dangerously low.
My father swallowed hard, refusing to meet my furious gaze.
"It is Greg," he finally whispered.
Greg was my late husband David’s former business partner and best friend.
He had always been kind to me after David's sudden death, bringing toys for the twins and offering financial advice.
"That makes absolutely no sense," I argued, shaking my head in pure disbelief.
"Greg is already incredibly wealthy from the tech company."
Daniel aggressively tapped his pen against the legal notepad.
"Actually, it makes perfect sense, Mara."
"I reviewed the tech company's corporate charter last month during our routine audit."
"If you die before the twins turn eighteen, all of David's remaining voting shares automatically revert to Greg."
The pieces of the horrific puzzle finally slammed perfectly into place.
Greg wanted absolute control of the billion-dollar tech empire.
He had manipulated my greedy, foolish sister into doing his dirty work for a tiny cut of the payout.
They had orchestrated the crash together, turning my own family against me in the process.
"We need to stop them before they reach the private airport," Daniel stated urgently.
He dialed the chief of police and relayed everything my father had just confessed.
I looked at the man who had raised me, feeling nothing but profound pity and disgust.
"You sold your own daughter's life for a free house and a country club membership," I told him.
My father buried his face in his hands and began to sob loudly.
I signaled for the security guards to escort him out of the room permanently.
Just as the door closed behind him, the large television in the conference room flickered to life.

A live news broadcast showed a massive fire raging at my holding company property.
The reporter announced that two bodies had just been pulled from the burning wreckage of the house.
