Chapter 8 - The Gunfight

Federal agents poured out of the armored vehicle, filling the warehouse with blinding tactical lights.

A deafening firefight instantly erupted as the cartel mercenaries outside breached the rear windows.

The air was completely filled with flying glass, splintered wood, and the relentless roar of automatic weapons.

The police chief realized his entire operation was collapsing in front of his eyes.

He ignored the federal agents entirely and aimed his weapon directly at Dorothy’s chest.

I did not think about the consequences or the sheer danger of my actions.

I lunged forward, throwing my entire body directly in front of my elderly neighbor.

A gunshot echoed sharply above the chaotic noise of the battlefield.

I felt a massive, burning impact tear through my side, knocking me completely off my feet.

I collapsed onto the cold concrete, clutching my stomach as warm blood soaked rapidly through my shirt.

Alex roared in fury, tackling the police chief to the ground and disarming him with brutal efficiency.

The federal backup quickly overwhelmed the remaining cartel members, forcing them to drop their weapons.

Alex rushed to my side, ripping his shirt to apply intense pressure to my bleeding wound.

My mother screamed in terror, dropping to her knees and grabbing my hand.

Dorothy leaned over me, tears streaming down her wrinkled face as she whispered apologies.

The flashing blue and red lights of the police cruisers began to blur into a beautiful, abstract painting.

The chaotic sounds of the warehouse slowly faded into a distant, hollow ringing.

My heavy eyelids fluttered shut as the world completely faded into absolute darkness.
