Chapter 3 - The Federal Agent

A chilling voice whispered in my ear, ordering me to drop my hands and turn around slowly.
I turned around to face Alex, whose eyes were wide with a mixture of anger and absolute panic.
He did not pull the trigger.
He aggressively shoved me into the vault and quickly pulled the heavy steel door shut behind us.
I demanded to know what he had done to my elderly neighbor.
Alex holstered his weapon and aggressively ran his hands through his messy hair.
He explained that he was not a criminal or a delivery driver, but an undercover federal agent.
He revealed that Dorothy was not a sweet old widow, but the former accountant for a ruthless international crime syndicate.
She had been living in witness protection for the past twenty years.
The cartel had finally discovered her location, and Alex was assigned to protect her until extraction.
He explained that the corrupt local police force was entirely owned by the cartel.
The police had raided the house an hour ago, kidnapped Dorothy, and brought her to the warehouse on the monitors.
I stared at the screens, watching my sweet neighbor bleed from a cut on her forehead.
Alex said he was trying to hack into the cartel’s offshore accounts to trade the money for her life.
Suddenly, all the glowing monitors in the vault violently flickered and turned to pure white static.
A single line of blood-red text appeared across every screen in the room.

The message read, "We know you are still in the house, Agent."
A thick, toxic yellow smoke began pouring violently from the small ventilation ducts in the ceiling.
