Chapter 2 - The Surveillance Room

I dropped the heavy crowbar and dove behind the dark staircase just before the intruder reached the bottom.

I held my breath, pressing my back against the cold concrete wall.

A pair of worn sneakers stepped onto the basement floor.

I peeked through the wooden slats of the stairs and instantly recognized the faded jeans.

It was Alex, the young delivery driver who had supposedly stolen Dorothy’s heart.

He was holding a suppressed pistol in his right hand and a ringing cell phone in his left.

He answered the call and spoke in a cold, authoritative voice that sounded absolutely nothing like a struggling young man.

He told the person on the phone that the extraction was complete and the money was secured.

Alex walked directly to the massive steel vault and quickly punched a complex code into the digital keypad.

The heavy locking mechanisms echoed loudly as the thick door slowly swung open.

I fully expected to see Dorothy trapped inside the metal room.

Instead, the glowing light from inside revealed a highly advanced surveillance center filled with massive computer monitors.

Alex grabbed a thick stack of manila folders from a metal desk inside the vault.

He turned his back to me and began typing rapidly on a glowing keyboard.

I silently crawled out from behind the stairs and crept toward the open vault door.

I peered around the thick steel frame and looked at the glowing surveillance feeds.

The screens did not show Dorothy’s house.

They displayed a dark, abandoned warehouse where Dorothy was currently tied tightly to a wooden chair.

A masked man dressed in black tactical gear was holding a heavy rifle directly to her head.

Suddenly, I felt the freezing metal barrel of a gun press firmly against the back of my neck.
