Chapter 4 - The Escape

The toxic yellow smoke immediately burned my eyes and scorched the inside of my lungs.
Alex grabbed a heavy fire extinguisher from the wall and smashed it wildly against the ventilation grate.
The thick metal bent just enough for him to jam a winter coat into the hole to block the deadly gas.
He grabbed my arm and pulled me toward a hidden emergency hatch located under the metal desk.
We dropped into a narrow dirt tunnel just as the heavy vault door began to glow red from intense heat.
We crawled through the suffocating darkness for what felt like an eternity.
We finally pushed through a wooden trapdoor and tumbled out into the muddy woods behind my neighborhood.
The night air was freezing, but my lungs desperately welcomed the fresh oxygen.
I looked back and watched Dorothy’s entire house burst into a massive pillar of orange flames.
Tires screeched on the pavement as black, unmarked SUVs surrounded the burning property.
Alex pulled a small, glowing GPS tracker from his tactical vest.
He explained that he had secretly planted a tracking chip inside the heel of Dorothy’s favorite shoes.
A blinking red dot on the screen showed she was being moved toward the city’s industrial shipping harbor.
We began to run through the dense forest, desperate to reach a safe distance from the cartel mercenaries.
Suddenly, my cell phone began to vibrate violently in my front pocket.
The bright screen illuminated the dark woods.

The caller ID clearly displayed my mother’s name.
I answered the phone with trembling hands, only to hear the terrifying, raspy voice of a man I did not know.
