Chapter 6 - The Betrayal
I instantly drew my weapon and aimed it directly at David's head.
My heart pounded violently against my ribs as I realized I was trapped in a room with a monster.
David did not even try to raise his hands or defend himself against the accusation.
He looked down at the dead Chief and let out a very long, exhausted sigh.
He slowly reached into his tactical vest and pulled out a digital audio recorder.
He tossed the small device onto the bloody floor between us and told me to press play.
I kept my gun leveled at his chest while I carefully tapped the play button with my boot.
The recording played a clear, undeniable conversation between the Chief and the Mayor.
They were explicitly discussing how to frame David for the precinct massacre to cover their tracks.
David explained that the Chief lied with his dying breath to ensure the syndicate's secrets died with him.
I slowly lowered my weapon, realizing the corruption ran deeper than I could ever imagine.
David tracked a hidden GPS microchip he had secretly planted in Lily's shoes three years ago.
The blinking red dot on his tablet showed she was moving rapidly toward the abandoned shipping docks.
We sprinted back to the armored SUV and raced toward the dark harbor under the freezing rain.
I asked David why the syndicate would kidnap their own biological weapon instead of just extracting her.
He gripping the steering wheel tightly and said they needed her for a massive public execution.
We arrived at the desolate, rusting shipping yard and immediately killed the headlights.
We crept silently through the maze of towering metal shipping containers.
We finally found the fake Claire dragging a crying Lily toward a massive black helicopter.
I aimed my gun at the fake Claire's back, fully prepared to take the lethal shot.

Suddenly, a cold, hard gun barrel was pressed directly against the back of my own head.
I turned my head slightly and saw my dead partner, Detective Miller, standing perfectly alive behind me.
