Chapter 5 - The Stolen Child

David dragged me out of the botanical gardens just as the state police sirens began to wail in the distance.

We jumped into his black armored SUV and sped frantically back toward the locked precinct.

He explained that Lily's blood had been genetically altered to carry the lethal toxin without harming her.

He told me that her tears and her sweat were fully saturated with the deadly nerve agent.

The teddy bear was just a distraction to get her inside the building past the metal detectors.

I felt a sudden, terrifying wave of nausea hit my stomach.

I realized that every single officer who had comforted the crying child was already infected.

We smashed the SUV directly through the front security gates of the precinct.

The entire building was completely dark, and the emergency backup generators had been destroyed.

We kicked the shattered front doors open and swept the lobby with our tactical flashlights.

Dozens of police officers were lying motionless on the floor, their faces twisted in absolute agony.

I frantically checked Detective Miller's pulse, but my partner was completely dead.

We rushed down the hallway toward the reinforced juvenile holding room where Lily had been placed.

The heavy steel door was completely ripped off its hinges with explosive force.

The room was entirely empty, and the child was completely gone.

I shined my flashlight onto the back wall and gasped at the horrific sight.

Chief Evans was pinned to the concrete wall with a massive tactical hunting knife through his chest.

He was coughing up dark blood, desperately clinging to his last few seconds of life.

I ran to his side and begged him to tell me who had taken the little girl.

The Chief looked at me with deeply apologetic eyes and used his bloody finger to point at David.

His dying words echoed through the silent room as he claimed David was the one who ordered the hit.
