Chapter 3 - The Next Aunt

I fell backward into the mud, my mind spinning wildly out of control.

Someone was intentionally playing a highly psychological, deadly game with my past.

If my mother was the original target, then Lily's warning suddenly made terrifying sense.

Lily had whispered that there were more cups for the "Next Aunt."

In my family, the only person I ever called Aunt was my mother's best friend, the current Mayor.

The Mayor was hosting a massive charity gala tonight at the downtown glass botanical gardens.

I sprinted back to my stolen cruiser and engaged the emergency sirens.

I broke every single traffic law in the city racing toward the botanical gardens.

I burst through the grand glass doors just as the Mayor stepped up to the crystal podium.

Hundreds of wealthy guests clapped loudly as she prepared to make a toast.

The Mayor smiled brightly and raised a small, green plastic cup to her lips.

I screamed her name and blindly tackled her off the stage before she could take a sip.

The green cup shattered against the marble floor, spilling the glowing white liquid everywhere.

The liquid hissed and immediately burned a deep, smoking hole directly through the thick carpet.

The entire ballroom erupted into absolute chaos and panic as guests fled toward the exits.

I pulled the Mayor to her feet and frantically asked if she was hurt.

The Mayor did not look scared or confused by the assassination attempt.

She calmly wiped her mouth with a silk handkerchief and looked at me with a terrifying grin.

She whispered that she had been drinking small doses of the poison for years to build an immunity.

Before I could process her horrific confession, she pulled a suppressed pistol from her dress and aimed it at my head.
