Chapter 8 - The Emergency Room

The wail of the approaching ambulance sirens pierced the chaotic silence of the resort.
I held my hands tightly against Mia’s head, my fingers stained crimson with her blood.
She was completely unresponsive, her face as pale as snow under the harsh afternoon sun.
Arthur Sterling knelt beside me, his own voice cracking as he ordered Mr. Henderson to clear a path for the paramedics.
Two emergency medics sprinted onto the pool deck with a stretcher and heavy trauma bags.
They quickly took over, applying a pressure bandage to Mia's head and securing a rigid collar around her fragile neck.
I climbed into the back of the ambulance, my entire body shaking with a terror I had never known before.
The paramedic worked frantically, calling out vital signs that sounded dangerously low.
I held Mia's small, cold hand, praying to every god listening that my daughter would survive this nightmare.
The ambulance roared through the city streets, running every red light to reach the trauma center.
We arrived at the hospital, and a team of doctors instantly rushed Mia through a set of heavy double doors.
I was forced to stay behind in the sterile, brightly lit waiting room, completely covered in my daughter's blood.
Every single horrible thought raced through my mind at a million miles an hour.
I was terrified that the severe trauma had caused a fatal brain bleed.
I was paralyzed by the thought that her weakened immune system from the chemotherapy could not survive a major surgery.
An hour passed like a lifetime, each tick of the waiting room clock echoing like a hammer in my skull.
Arthur Sterling arrived at the hospital, flanked by two massive private security guards.
He sat down beside me, gently placing a warm cup of coffee into my trembling hands.
He told me that the police had officially arrested Brad and Cassandra at the resort gates before they could escape.
He promised me that he had already deployed his most expensive corporate lawyers to ensure they stayed in prison for a very long time.
I thanked him, but his words offered absolutely no comfort while my daughter was fighting for her life in the next room.
Finally, the heavy double doors swung open, and the lead pediatric trauma surgeon walked into the waiting room.
His surgical scrubs were stained, and his expression was incredibly grim and serious.
I stood up, my knees buckling slightly as I braced myself for the absolute worst news possible.

The doctor took a deep breath, looking directly into my terrified eyes.
He told me that they had successfully stopped the bleeding, but they had found something completely terrifying on her brain scan.
