Chapter 4 - The False Accusation

The voice belonged to an older gentleman wearing a tailored linen suit and holding a silver walking cane.
He demanded that the security guards release me immediately.
The guards hesitated, looking toward Mr. Henderson for guidance.
Brad stepped forward, pointing an aggressive finger at the older gentleman.
He told the old man to mind his own business before he got hurt.
The older gentleman ignored Brad entirely and walked straight over to Mia.
He knelt down, smiled warmly, and gently wiped a tear from her cheek.
He told Mia that she was the bravest girl he had ever seen.
I pulled away from the confused guards and wrapped my arms protectively around my daughter.
I thanked the stranger for his kindness, but I warned him that these people were incredibly dangerous.
Brad was absolutely furious that his authority was being questioned in public.
He pulled out his own cell phone and dialed the local police department directly.
He told the dispatcher that a deranged woman was physically assaulting guests at the resort.
He requested that officers be sent immediately to make an arrest.
I felt a cold sweat break out on my forehead as the reality of the situation set in.
I was a single mother with no power, going up against a man who clearly owned the local police force.
Brad’s girlfriend, whose name I later learned was Cassandra, walked over to her designer beach bag.
She discreetly unclasped her heavy diamond watch and slipped it into the palm of her hand.
While the crowd was focused on the older gentleman arguing with Brad, Cassandra bumped hard into my shoulder.
She loudly apologized, claiming she lost her balance on the wet concrete.
I did not realize it at the time, but she had used the brief contact to slip her watch directly into my open tote bag.
Five minutes later, two uniformed police officers marched onto the pool deck with their hands resting on their utility belts.
Brad greeted them by their first names, shaking their hands like they were old friends.
He pointed at me and told the officers that I had been harassing his girlfriend all morning.
Cassandra suddenly began to cry fake, dramatic tears.
She told the officers that she just realized her diamond watch was missing from her wrist.
She pointed directly at my tote bag and said she saw me hovering over her things earlier.
The officers approached me with stern faces and demanded to search my belongings.
I confidently handed them my bag, knowing I had absolutely nothing to hide.
The lead officer reached his hand inside and pulled out a glittering, diamond-encrusted watch.

He held it up for the entire crowd to see.
The officer pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt and told me to turn around.
