Chapter 1 - The Special Gift

My daughter Mia had completed her last round of chemo only eleven days before.
She had lost all of her beautiful hair.
She had spent her birthday in a hospital bed with an IV instead of bouncing around at the trampoline park she had dreamed about for months.
So when her oncologist finally said we were finished for now, Mia did not ask for toys or a party.
She just looked up at me with exhausted little eyes and whispered that she wanted to go somewhere with a pool.
She told me she just wanted to feel like a regular kid again.
That same day, I booked us a two-night stay at a beautiful resort less than an hour away.
The evening before our pool day, we followed every single rule the resort gave us.
We reserved two lounge chairs, clipped our towels to them, and attached the tags with our room number clearly written.
The next morning, Mia and I walked away briefly to get some fresh fruit smoothies.
We were gone for about fifteen minutes.
When we came back, a woman in a pricey swimsuit was stretched across one lounge chair as if she owned the entire pool deck.
Her boyfriend was lounging on the other chair, barely paying attention as he scrolled on his phone.
Our personal towels were shoved carelessly into the nearby trash can.
I inhaled slowly, trying my best to stay calm for Mia.
I politely said excuse me and explained that those chairs were reserved for us.
The woman did not even bother to sit up.
She casually stated that we were not using them, so they did not belong to us anymore.
I told her we had only stepped away for a few minutes.
She gave a careless shrug and told me that sounded like a personal problem.
Then she looked directly at Mia.
Her eyes moved over my daughter’s bare head, her small wrists, and the hospital bracelet Mia still wore because she said it reminded her she had been brave.
The woman’s expression twisted with cruel, unapologetic judgment.
She slid her sunglasses down and said I should take my sick child somewhere more appropriate.
For a moment, I could not force a single word out of my mouth.
Mia’s fragile fingers squeezed mine tightly.
I wanted to explode and make that woman regret every single syllable.
But my little girl had fought too hard for this day, and I refused to let one heartless stranger ruin the memory she deserved.
So I pulled our towels from the trash, found two empty chairs farther away, and sat beside Mia while pretending my heart was not breaking.
Mia tried her hardest to smile at me.
I tried to make the rest of the day feel normal and fun.
Then, about twenty minutes later, a resort employee in a polo shirt walked by us.
He glanced at me and gave a subtle wink.
A few seconds later, he walked straight up to the woman who had stolen our chairs.
In his hands, he carried a beautiful small blue box tied with a white ribbon.
He cheerfully told her congratulations, announcing she was the 500th guest check-in of the week.
He said the resort had prepared a very special VIP gift just for her.
The woman immediately sat taller and smiled like she had been waiting all day to be treated like royalty.
People around the pool began to look over at the commotion.
Her boyfriend finally lifted his eyes from his expensive phone.
The woman excitedly opened the lid of the blue box.

The scream that came out of her mouth made the entire pool deck fall completely silent.
She threw the box into the air, revealing a massive nest of live, crawling palmetto bugs that scattered directly onto her designer swimsuit.
