Chapter 5 - The Hidden Drive
The chilling threat written on the piece of white paper caused Clara's entire body to tremble violently with fear.
She knew Samantha was completely unhinged and capable of doing something incredibly violent to get what she wanted.
Mr. Hayes immediately called the hospital security desk and demanded a twenty-four-hour armed guard for the hallway.
He promised Clara that he would absolutely not sleep until they found the evidence needed to destroy Gabriel's forged contract.
After the dedicated lawyer left to prepare their defense, Clara sat entirely alone in the quiet, dim room.
She held her tiny son against her chest, listening to the steady, incredibly comforting rhythm of his heartbeat.
A soft, timid knock suddenly echoed from the heavy wooden door of her hospital room.
The door slowly pushed open, revealing little Violet clutching her stuffed rabbit tightly.
Clara gasped, wondering how the six-year-old girl had managed to completely bypass the security guards outside.
"Mr. Hayes told me to wait in the cafeteria, but I wanted to see you and the new baby," Violet whispered innocently.
Clara smiled warmly and motioned for the incredibly brave little girl to come sit beside her on the bed.
Violet carefully climbed up and looked down at her sleeping baby brother with pure wonder and love in her eyes.
"My daddy is a very bad man, but I stole something important from his secret safe," Violet announced proudly.
The little girl reached into the pocket of her yellow cardigan and pulled out a small black USB drive.
Clara's heart raced as she gently took the small electronic device from Violet's small hands.
"He locked it away after he yelled at Samantha about a lot of money," Violet explained quietly.
Clara immediately grabbed her personal laptop from her overnight hospital bag resting on the chair.
She plugged the USB drive in and watched as a massive folder of hidden audio files rapidly populated the screen.
She clicked on the very first recording, and Gabriel's angry voice instantly filled the quiet room.
He was screaming at Samantha because his family's massive trust fund strictly required a biological male heir to unlock millions.
But the very next sentence Gabriel spoke in the recording made Clara's blood run completely cold.
"You know I am completely sterile, Samantha, so we have to make sure nobody ever tests that baby's DNA," Gabriel yelled on the tape.
Clara stared at the screen in absolute horror, entirely unable to process what she had just heard.
