Chapter 14 - The Billionaire's Court

The opulent, mahogany-paneled courtroom in downtown Chicago felt entirely different from the sterile municipal building where Clara had fought Gabriel. This room smelled of ancient money, polished leather, and absolute, unquestionable power.
Clara sat beside Mr. Hayes at the defense table, her hands shaking so violently she could barely hold her pen. Violet and the baby had been placed in a secure, state-run foster facility for the past three agonizing days. Every single second away from her children felt like a physical knife twisting in her chest.
Across the aisle sat Victoria Vance, surrounded by a terrifying army of six highly paid corporate attorneys. She looked magnificent and completely untouchable in her tailored black dress, staring at Clara with the bored amusement of a predator watching a trapped mouse.
Julian sat directly behind Clara in the gallery, his face a mask of barely contained, explosive rage. He had officially resigned from the police force that morning, realizing that a detective's badge was completely useless against his mother's infinite wealth.
The distinguished judge entered the courtroom and sat down with a heavy sigh. He did not even look at Clara; his eyes were entirely fixed on Victoria Vance with a look of deep, terrified respect.
"We are here to rule on the emergency petition for permanent grand-parental custody filed by Victoria Vance," the judge announced quickly.
Victoria's lead attorney stood up and smoothed his expensive silk tie. "Your Honor, we have presented absolute, irrefutable evidence that Clara Linwood is a highly unstable, dangerous criminal. She conspired with her ex-husband to commit medical fraud, and local police recently discovered a massive quantity of narcotics in her kitchen."
Mr. Hayes jumped to his feet, slamming his fist fiercely on the wooden table. "That is an outrageous, completely fabricated lie! The drugs were planted by mercenaries hired by the Vance family to intentionally frame my client!"
The judge banged his gavel aggressively, threatening to hold Mr. Hayes in contempt of court for his wild, unsubstantiated accusations against a respected pillar of the community.
Victoria’s lawyer then played their absolute trump card. He walked over to a television screen and played a recorded video deposition from the federal prison. Gabriel's bruised face appeared on the screen, looking directly into the camera.
"Clara planned the entire IVF swap," Gabriel lied smoothly on the tape, honoring his sickening deal with Victoria. "She wanted a billionaire's baby to secure her own financial future. She is a completely manipulative monster."
Clara gasped, tears streaming down her pale face as Gabriel’s toxic lies completely poisoned the courtroom. Victoria Vance smiled a cold, victorious smile, knowing the trap had snapped perfectly shut.
The judge adjusted his glasses and looked down at the official custody transfer papers resting on his desk.

"Given the shocking testimony of the ex-husband and the pending criminal charges against the mother, I have absolutely no choice," the judge declared. "I am awarding full, immediate, and permanent physical custody of the infant to his biological grandmother, Victoria Vance."
Clara screamed in sheer, absolute devastation as the judge slammed his heavy gavel. Julian leaped over the wooden railing to catch her as she completely collapsed, her entire world shattered by the ruthless power of a billionaire's checkbook.
