Chapter 18 - The Vault of Secrets

The deafening wail of the security alarm echoed brutally against the cold concrete walls of the subterranean vault. Clara froze in absolute panic, clutching the heavy black ledger tightly to her chest.
"It was a trap," Julian realized, instantly drawing his heavy service weapon and aiming it directly at the locked elevator doors. "The legacy code worked, but the mainframe alerted security the second I used my biometric scan. She knew I would come back eventually."
Before Clara could fully process the terrifying reality of being trapped entirely underground, a secondary steel door at the far end of the vault hissed open.
Victoria Vance walked into the freezing bunker, flanked by four massive, heavily armed private security contractors. She was still wearing her magnificent gala gown, looking completely serene despite the chaotic blaring of the alarms.
"You really are a predictable disappointment, Julian," Victoria sighed heavily, entirely ignoring the gun pointed directly at her chest. "I assumed you would try to steal Gabriel's pathetic little blackmail file. The man was a fool, and leaving it in my own building was his greatest mistake."
Clara stepped forward, her fear entirely replaced by a blinding, protective rage. "You took my son! You destroyed my entire life for a bloodline you don't even deserve!"
Victoria laughed aloud, a cruel, entirely soulless sound that chilled Clara to the bone.
"Your life was destroyed the moment Gabriel married you, my dear," Victoria sneered confidently. "Did you really think Gabriel found that corrupt fertility doctor on his own? Did you think a minor trust fund baby had the connections to access a highly restricted, billionaire donor file?"
Clara felt the breath violently leave her lungs as the horrifying truth finally revealed itself.
"I orchestrated the entire IVF swap from the very beginning," Victoria confessed proudly, her icy eyes gleaming with pure malice. "My son abandoned me. He refused to give me an heir. So, when I learned Gabriel was desperate for a child to secure his own pathetic trust fund, I anonymously fed him the information. I paid the fertility doctor to ensure my son's sample was used. I used Gabriel's greed to secretly incubate my grandson in your womb."
Julian’s hands shook violently as he aimed the gun at his own mother. The sheer, unfathomable evil of her plan was completely staggering. She had treated Clara like a disposable vessel, entirely manipulating years of their lives just to steal a baby she felt rightfully belonged to her empire.
"You are a monster," Julian whispered, his voice cracking with absolute disgust.
"I am a billionaire, Julian, there is a distinct difference," Victoria corrected smoothly. "Now, hand over the ledger, and I will allow you both to walk out of this vault alive. You will leave the city, you will never contact the child, and you will forget this ever happened."
Clara looked at the heavy black book in her hands. It contained every bribe, every assassination, and every political manipulation that built the Vance dynasty. It was the only leverage they had in the entire world.

"No," Clara stated firmly, her voice echoing powerfully through the vault. "You are never touching my family again."
Victoria’s arrogant smile instantly vanished, replaced by a mask of pure, unhinged fury. She snapped her fingers aggressively, ordering her heavily armed mercenaries to open fire.
