Chapter 9 - The Rescue Mission

Marco told me I had exactly one hour to surrender myself at his private airstrip in New Jersey.
If I was even one minute late, the surgical extraction on Lily would begin.
I did not bother crying or negotiating.
I loaded every single weapon Rossi had given me into the trunk of the SUV.
I drove onto the tarmac of the private airfield just as a massive storm began to break over the city.
Marco’s private jet was idling on the runway, surrounded by a dozen armed guards.
I did not stop the vehicle.
I slammed the gas pedal to the floor and rammed the SUV directly into the first group of mercenaries.
I kicked the door open and fired relentlessly, moving with the cold precision of a man who had absolutely nothing left to lose.
I fought my way up the metal stairs of the aircraft, my suit soaked in rain and blood.
I kicked the cabin door open, pointing my rifle at Marco’s chest.
But Marco was not standing triumphantly over my family.
Marco was slumped in a leather luxury seat, bleeding profusely from a gunshot wound to his stomach.
Lily and Clara were completely untouched, sitting quietly in the back row.
I lowered my weapon, utterly confused by the scene before me.

Then Clara slowly stood up, holding a smoking pistol in her hand.
She looked at me with an empty, terrifying smile and said, "I told him you would come."
