Chapter 6 - The Hit Squad

We abandoned the van and disappeared into the labyrinth of the subway system.

I used the few hundred dollars I had in my pocket to rent a filthy motel room in Brooklyn.

Clara collapsed onto the cheap mattress, her skin burning with a severe fever.

Lily sat quietly in the corner, clutching her brown pharmacy bag like a shield.

I told them I was going out to find a burner phone and some clean bandages.

When I returned thirty minutes later, I saw three black SUVs parked outside our motel room.

Four heavily armed men in tactical gear were kicking down the door to room number twelve.

They were not wearing police uniforms.

I drew the pistol I had taken from David and crept through the shadows of the parking lot.

I heard Lily scream from inside the room.

I burst through the broken door and shot the first two men in their chests before they could react.

The third man spun around, but I tackled him through the cheap glass window.

I pinned him to the asphalt and demanded to know where Marco was hiding.

The mercenary laughed, spitting blood onto my face.

He told me Marco had not sent them to kill us.

He smiled and said Dr. Kaplan had hired them because he needed the little girl alive for a surgical procedure.
