Chapter 10 - The False Haven

I stared at Clara, my mind struggling to process her betrayal.

She had shot Marco herself to ensure she was the one controlling the situation.

I acted purely on instinct, disarming her before she could turn the weapon on me.

I threw Marco’s bleeding body out of the plane, ordered the terrified pilot to take off, and saved my family.

By morning, my lawyers had used the evidence on Marco’s laptop to clear my name and restore my access to my billion-dollar empire.

Marco was dead, his mercenaries were scattered, and the nightmare was finally over.

I bought a heavily fortified private island in the Caribbean to ensure Clara and Lily would never be hunted again.

We sat by a massive stone fireplace in our new mansion, listening to the ocean waves crash against the cliffs.

It was the perfect, peaceful ending I had fought so brutally to achieve.

I walked over to Clara’s coat to get her phone charger from her pocket.

My hand brushed against a small, hidden flash drive stitched into the lining.

I plugged it into my laptop out of sheer curiosity while Clara was reading a book to Lily.

It contained a recorded phone call between Clara and my own personal lawyer from eight years ago.

Clara’s voice said, "Marco is too impatient, but if we poison Victor slowly, I can inherit his entire empire as the mother of his only child."

She continued, "Draw up the new will tomorrow, and I will give Victor the final dose myself."
