Chapter 6 - The Getaway

The old doctor collapsed onto the concrete floor, completely knocked out by the heavy glass pot and the scalding coffee.

I frantically searched his pockets, finding a small vial labeled as a counteragent to the paralytic drug he had used.

I injected it directly into Dominic's thigh, praying that my reckless medical gamble would actually work.

Dominic gasped loudly, his lungs finally expanding as the color slowly returned to his pale face.

He struggled to his feet, leaning heavily against my shoulder, and told me we had less than five minutes before Silas's men arrived.

I woke Lily, scooped her into my arms, and supported Dominic as we stumbled out the back door into the rainy alleyway.

A fleet of black SUVs was already turning the corner, their headlights blinding us in the dark street.

Dominic was still too weak to drive, so I shoved him and Lily into the back of a parked bakery delivery van.

I jumped into the driver's seat, hot-wired the ignition just like I had watched Dominic do earlier, and slammed my foot on the gas pedal.

I threw the heavy van into a flawless, high-speed drifting turn, narrowly clipping the front bumper of the lead SUV.

I navigated the impossibly tight alleyways with practiced precision, shifting gears effortlessly and losing our heavily armed pursuers in the maze of streets.

Dominic watched me from the rearview mirror, his eyes wide with absolute shock as he finally caught his breath.

He demanded to know where a quiet, polite human resources manager had learned how to drive like a professional bank robber.

I kept my eyes on the road and finally confessed the truth I had hidden for eight long years.

Before I worked for his father, I was the most sought-after getaway driver for the rival Chicago syndicate, until his father granted me amnesty in New York.

Dominic started to laugh, a genuine sound of amazement, realizing his father had known exactly how dangerous I truly was.

Suddenly, the faint, rhythmic beeping sound of a digital transmitter began echoing from the back of the van.

Lily held up her stuffed rabbit, completely unaware that a military-grade GPS tracker was sewn deep inside its stomach.
