Chapter 3 - The Price of Loyalty

The metallic click of Marco cocking his weapon echoed violently in the small, ruined apartment.

Marco coldly apologized to Dominic, stating that the boss's uncle, Silas Moretti, had offered him ten million dollars to ensure that document never saw the light of day.

Dominic didn't even turn around to look at the man who had guarded his life for over a decade.

He calmly asked Marco if he really thought Silas would let a loose end live long enough to spend that kind of money.

Marco hesitated for a fraction of a second, his finger trembling slightly on the trigger.

Dominic moved with a terrifying, blinding speed that I could barely process.

He spun backward, using his left forearm to deflect Marco's gun barrel toward the ceiling just as the weapon fired.

The gunshot deafened me, sending plaster showering down from the ceiling onto Lily's hair.

Dominic drove his right fist brutally into Marco's throat, causing the massive security chief to drop his weapon and fall to his knees, gasping for air.

I didn't hesitate.

I dove across the floor, grabbed Marco's discarded gun, and scrambled back to cover my daughter.

Dominic delivered a final, devastating kick to Marco's jaw, instantly knocking the traitor completely unconscious.

He knelt down, picked up the dropped parchment document, and looked at me with an expression of pure disbelief.

He told me that his father's signature on this document legally transferred fifty-one percent of the entire Moretti financial empire directly to me.

My mind spun in circles, completely unable to comprehend how I could possibly own a mafia empire.

Suddenly, the encrypted cell phone in Marco's pocket began to ring with a harsh, buzzing tone.

Dominic pulled it out and pressed the speaker button, filling the room with the sinister, rasping voice of Silas Moretti.

Silas laughed darkly, telling Dominic that the explosion at the plaza was just a distraction to keep the police busy.

Silas casually mentioned that he had just sent two dozen heavily armed hitmen into our apartment building.

Heavy, synchronized footsteps began to echo loudly from the stairwell right outside my front door.
