Chapter 4 - The Concrete Labyrinth

Dominic didn't waste a single second listening to the rest of his uncle's threats.

He threw the burner phone onto the floor, shattered it beneath the heel of his shoe, and grabbed my hand.

He dragged me and Lily toward the apartment window, throwing it open to the freezing rain pouring down outside.

We scrambled out onto the rusted iron fire escape just as the front door of my apartment was violently kicked off its hinges.

Bullets shattered the window glass right behind us, raining sharp fragments onto our shoulders.

Dominic climbed down the slippery metal stairs with terrifying agility, holding Lily securely under one arm.

We hit the wet pavement of the alleyway and immediately sprinted toward a stolen, nondescript sedan parked near the dumpsters.

Dominic hot-wired the vehicle in less than ten seconds, slamming the gearshift into drive as hitmen poured out of the alley behind us.

The car's tires screamed on the wet asphalt as we recklessly swerved through the narrow streets of Brooklyn.

I demanded to know why his father would secretly leave the majority of a criminal syndicate to a random human resources manager.

Dominic kept his eyes locked on the road, swerving to avoid a delivery truck, and told me that his father had known Silas was embezzling funds.

His father had needed a proxy he could trust implicitly, someone entirely outside the mafia ecosystem, to hold the power until Dominic was ready.

Suddenly, the car radio interrupted a music broadcast with a breaking news alert from the New York Police Department.

The news anchor announced that Dominic Moretti was the prime suspect in the plaza bombing and was considered armed and highly dangerous.

The broadcast also displayed my name, labeling me as a known accomplice who had kidnapped a child.

Dominic slammed his fist against the steering wheel, realizing Silas had corrupted the police commissioner to hunt us down.

Red and blue flashing police lights suddenly illuminated the rearview mirror, rapidly closing the distance between us.

We were trapped on a narrow bridge with corrupt police behind us and Silas's hitmen waiting for us in the city.
