Chapter 10 - The New Empire

I didn't scream, and I didn't hesitate for a single fraction of a second.
I grabbed the heavy pistol Dominic had dropped when he fell, raised it with both hands, and fired a single shot directly into Silas's chest.
Silas dropped his silver revolver, staring at me with a look of absolute, shocked disbelief before collapsing lifelessly onto the bloody carpet.
I threw the gun away and dropped to my knees next to Dominic, pressing my hands desperately against his profusely bleeding shoulder.
Dominic coughed violently, but a weak, genuine smile crossed his pale face when Lily wrapped her small arms tightly around his neck.
Within twenty minutes, the heavy steel doors burst open as Dominic's fiercely loyal lieutenants finally arrived, securing the entire compound and cleaning up the mess.
Several weeks later, the remaining corruption within the Moretti empire had been entirely purged, and the Five Families formally recognized our new leadership.
I officially took my rightful place as the fifty-one percent majority shareholder, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Dominic as his equal partner in the boardroom.
The criminal underworld learned to fear and respect the new alliance, especially after Dominic and I quietly began building a beautiful, romantic life together.
We stood on the balcony of his restored penthouse at Moretti Plaza, watching the city lights glitter below while Lily played safely in the living room.
We finally had the peace, the power, and the family we had both desperately fought to protect.
But later that night, a heavy envelope sealed with black wax was slipped under the front door of our heavily guarded apartment.
I broke the wax seal and pulled out a single sheet of paper written in dark red ink.

The message stated that I had kept the Chicago syndicate's money for far too long, and now they were coming to collect my daughter as payment.
The nightmare was just beginning all over again.
