Chapter 5 - The Doctor's Prescription

Dominic jerked the steering wheel hard to the right, crashing through a chain-link fence and plunging the car down a steep, muddy embankment.
We hit the bottom of a hidden drainage tunnel, perfectly escaping the line of sight of the police cruisers roaring past on the bridge above.
Dominic abandoned the ruined car and led us on foot through the pitch-black underground labyrinth of the city's sewer system.
After an hour of exhausting walking, we emerged through a grated door into the basement of an abandoned bakery in Little Italy.
Dominic explained that this was a ghost safehouse, known only to his father and the syndicate's oldest, most trusted medical doctor.
An elderly man in a stained white coat greeted us warmly, immediately setting up a cot for an exhausted Lily to sleep on.
The old doctor expertly cleaned and stitched a deep glass cut on Dominic's arm, muttering about the tragic chaos happening in the streets.
Dominic and I finally sat down at a small wooden table, sharing a quiet, vulnerable moment of exhaustion.
He looked at me with soft, apologetic eyes, admitting that he had failed to protect the empire his father had built.
I reached across the table and gently touched his hand, telling him that we were going to take it back together.
The doctor walked over with a warm smile, handing us both steaming mugs of dark black coffee to fight off the freezing cold.
Dominic took a long sip of the bitter liquid, thanking the old man for his decades of unwavering loyalty.
Less than five seconds later, Dominic dropped the ceramic mug, which shattered loudly on the concrete floor.
He clutched his throat, his face turning entirely pale as he collapsed violently to his knees, gasping for oxygen.
The kindly old doctor pulled a massive, heavy syringe from his pocket, his warm smile fading into a look of greedy desperation.

He apologized to a paralyzed Dominic, stating that Silas had offered him two million dollars and a peaceful retirement in Tuscany.
I picked up the heavy, boiling coffee pot from the hot plate and smashed it directly across the traitorous doctor's skull.
