Chapter 9 - The Microdot Secret

I stared at the ransom note in absolute panic, unable to understand why they wanted a simple food receipt.
Vance examined the note carefully and finally realized the true gravity of the situation.
He explained that Julian used thermal receipt paper to imprint microscopic banking codes for the cartel.
That specific four hundred dollar receipt contained the master routing numbers for Julian's entire offshore fortune.
Without that piece of paper, the cartel could not access the millions of dollars Julian had stolen.
I remembered that I had crumpled the receipt up and thrown it in my uniform pocket out of pure frustration.
I frantically searched the laundry pile in my bedroom and found the wrinkled uniform apron.
I reached deep into the front pocket and pulled out the crumpled, stained piece of thermal paper.
Vance grabbed his encrypted radio and coordinated a massive tactical team to surround the city bridge.
He promised me that we were going to get Chloe back without letting the cartel keep a single dime.
We drove to the massive steel bridge, the freezing night wind whipping violently off the dark river below.
A solitary figure dressed entirely in black was standing near the edge of the bridge, holding a trembling Chloe by the arm.
I jumped out of the SUV, holding the receipt high in the air to show the kidnapper I had the code.
The figure slowly walked forward into the light of the streetlamps, pushing Chloe toward me.

As the kidnapper pulled down his dark ski mask to inspect the receipt, I gasped in absolute horror.
The man holding my sister hostage was the city's beloved Chief of Police.
