Chapter 8 - The Hostage Note

I violently ripped the medical IV lines out of my arm, completely ignoring the screaming alarms.

Arthur and Vance tried to push me back onto the hospital bed, warning me that I was still bleeding.

I fought them off with adrenaline-fueled strength, screaming that Julian's cartel contacts had found my sister.

Vance immediately drew his weapon and promised he would drive me to the apartment right now.

We sprinted out of the private hospital and jumped into his sleek, armored black SUV.

Vance drove recklessly through the city streets, running every single red light to get us there in time.

My hands shook uncontrollably as I stared out the window, praying to God that Chloe was safe.

We screeched to a halt in front of my rundown apartment complex and ran up the concrete stairs.

My front door was completely shattered, the deadbolt ripped violently from the cheap wooden frame.

I rushed inside, calling Chloe's name, but the tiny apartment was completely empty.

The furniture was overturned, and Chloe's school backpack was torn apart on the living room floor.

Vance pointed his flashlight at the kitchen counter, illuminating a single piece of crisp white paper.

It was a ransom note written in thick, aggressive black marker.

The note said they did not want the binder, the ten thousand dollars, or Julian's release.

They demanded that I bring the original four hundred dollar receipt from that night to the city bridge.

If I did not bring that specific piece of paper in exactly one hour, Chloe would be thrown into the freezing river.
